Roman Clay is the hottest new wall coating of 2025

Roman clay has become a popular choice for homeowners and designers looking to add depth, texture, and a natural, earthy aesthetic to their walls. However, since Roman Clay is applied with to trowel, putty knife, etc. there is a bit of a learning curve – but I promise that it is not that hard!

So whether you’re a DIY enthusiast or a beginner, this comprehensive guide will walk you through the process of applying Roman clay to a wall in your home. And if you get it right, Roman Clay can transform ordinary walls into stunning focal points, perfect for modern, rustic, or Mediterranean-inspired interiors.

What Is Roman Clay?

What is Roman Clay?

Roman clay is a plaster-like material made from natural limestone and clay. It’s applied in thin layers to create a smooth, velvety finish with subtle texture variations. Unlike paint, Roman clay offers a tactile surface that reflects light beautifully, giving your walls a soft, organic look.

Why Choose Roman Clay?

  • Eco-Friendly: Made from natural ingredients, Roman clay is non-toxic and sustainable.
  • Durable: When sealed, it’s resistant to scratches and stains.
  • Versatile: Suitable for various surfaces and styles.
  • Unique Finish: Offers a hand-applied look with rich texture and depth.

Tools and Materials Needed

Before you start, gather the following tools and materials:

Step 1: Prepare the Wall Surface

Prepare the wall surface by spackling and holes.

Proper wall preparation is crucial for a good Roman Clay finish. Follow these steps:

  1. Clean the Wall: Remove any dust, dirt, or grease. Use a mild soap and water solution if needed.
  2. Repair Imperfections: Fill cracks, holes, or uneven areas with spackle or joint compound. Sand the surface smooth once dry.
  3. Prime the Wall: If your wall is porous or has an uneven texture, apply a primer. This ensures better adhesion and a uniform base for the Roman clay.

Step 2: Protect Surrounding Areas

Roman clay application can get messy. Use painter’s tape to mask off baseboards, ceilings, and adjacent walls. Lay down drop cloths to protect floors and furniture.

Step 3: Mix the Roman Clay

Most Roman clay products come as a powder or premixed paste. If powdered, mix it with water according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Stir thoroughly until the mixture reaches a creamy, yogurt-like consistency.

Step 4: Apply the First Coat

Apply the first coat of roman clay using a putty knife.
  1. Load the Trowel: Scoop a small amount of Roman clay onto your trowel or putty knife.
  2. Spread the Clay: Starting at the top corner of the wall, apply a thin layer using smooth, overlapping strokes. Aim for even coverage but don’t worry about achieving a perfect finish at this stage.
  3. Feather the Edges: To avoid harsh lines, use light pressure and blend the edges of each stroke into the surrounding area.
  4. Dry Time: Allow the first coat to dry completely, usually 4-6 hours, depending on the product and humidity levels.

Step 5: Apply Additional Coats

Repeat the application process for 2-3 additional coats, depending on the desired texture and depth. Each coat will add more dimension and character to the wall. Allow each layer to dry thoroughly before applying the next.

Step 6: Sand and Refine

Sand any rough areas of the roman clay as needed.

Once the final coat is dry, lightly sand the surface with fine-grit sandpaper to smooth out any rough spots or high points. This step enhances the velvety finish of the Roman clay.

Step 7: Seal the Surface (Optional)

If your wall is in a high-traffic area or a room prone to moisture (like a bathroom), apply a sealer to protect the surface. Choose a matte or satin finish to maintain the natural look of the Roman clay.

Tips for Success

  • Practice First: If you’re new to Roman clay, practice on a small piece of drywall or a test wall before tackling a larger surface.
  • Work in Small Sections: This prevents the clay from drying too quickly and ensures smoother blending.
  • Experiment with Textures: Vary your trowel strokes to create unique patterns and textures that suit your style.
  • Choose the Right Color: Roman clay comes in various hues, from warm earth tones to cool grays. Consider your room’s lighting and decor when selecting a color.

Maintaining Roman Clay Walls

Roman clay walls are low-maintenance but benefit from gentle care:

  • Dust Regularly: Use a soft, dry cloth or feather duster to remove dust.
  • Avoid Harsh Cleaners: Clean with a damp cloth and mild soap if needed. Avoid abrasive cleaners that could damage the finish.
  • Reapply Sealer: In high-traffic areas, reseal the wall every few years to maintain its durability.

Cost Breakdown

Overall, the cost to complete this project was just the cost for the Primer and the Roman Clay (since I already had all the other tools like the putty knife, painter’s tape, etc.)

As a rule of thumb, you will need the following quanitities of roman clay based on the square footage of your applicaiton area:

Roman Clay coverage area

  • 1 kilo: Covers about 20–25 square feet
  • 5 kilo: Covers about 100–125 square feet
  • 10 kilo: Covers about 200–250 square feet
  • 20 kilo: Covers about 400–500 square feet

For this project, I had about 100SF of wall area to cover. Therefore, I needed 5 Kilos of Roman Clay ($88) and I also bought one gallon of primer ($64). As a result, this project cost me around $150.

Final Thoughts

Roman clay is a beautiful way to bring character and sophistication to your home’s interior. Its timeless appeal and eco-friendly nature make it a standout choice for modern homeowners. With patience and attention to detail, you can achieve a stunning finish that transforms your space. Here is a look at the Final Result for this Project!
